Position Opening Legal Assistant – Family Department – Located in St Catharines

Role: Legal Assistant – Family Law

Lancaster Brooks & Welch LLP,  are Niagara’s oldest law firm (1882), located in St Catharines – our established, and respected family law department is expanding. We are seeking an experienced legal assistant to support a lawyer whose primary responsibility is Family Law.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Works independently to prepare, serve and file documents with appropriate external agencies;
  • Can prepare correspondence and documentation from dictation in an expertly, independent and accurate manner;
  • Has an in depth knowledge of the technical nature/legal aspects of the different types of documentation and is able to draft (as requested), editing and processing legal documents (i.e. applications for divorce, separation agreements, case conference and settlement conference briefs, financial statements, statement of claims, motions, mediation and pre-trial briefs, trial records. etc.);
  • Receive, vet and process incoming cold and existing client calls, ensuring conflict searches are conducted in accordance with internal policy, scheduling appointments as deemed appropriate;
  • Handles all clients completely, with tact in a professional, courteous and enthusiastic manner;
  • Keeps a file moving (send faxes, e-mail, miscellaneous paperwork etc.) and is able to quickly assess what is required in any given situation and, in absence of lawyer;
  • Anticipates potential problems and averts or resolves, knowing when to escalate the problem to a senior member of the team or supervising lawyer;
  • Able to consult with lawyers and co-workers as required, communicating information in a clear and concise manner;

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

· College Diploma and 1-5 years of Family Law experience;

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills for liaising with clients, lawyers and court offices;

· Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to work well under pressure;

· Ability to manage multiple priorities while paying attention to detail;

· Excellent interpersonal and client service skills, strong initiative and exceptional ability to work in a team oriented atmosphere;

· Strong technical skills (including Microsoft Office);

· Ability to prioritize and focus.
