Robert B. Reid Participates in Function Focussed on Employees With Disabilities in Employment
Robert B. Reid Thanks Lt. Governor David Onley for Addressing the Rotary Club
There are 1.5M Ontarians with a physical disability, 15% of our population. Today they not only suffer from their physical disability but they also suffer a paralysis of opportunity and a paralysis of hope resulting from difficulty in gaining access to a meaningful career. Provided with the opportunity, the disabled can fulfill a meaningful role in our society including within the workplace. Many studies have confirmed that the working disabled have higher levels of job performance and job retention.
Myth: businesses cannot afford the cost to accommodate the disabled.
Fact: most employers do not spend anything to accommodate the disabled and of those that do the average expenditure is less than $100!
The Lt. Governor asked us to imagine that we were interviewing to fill a position but we could only see the candidate from the waist down. Imagine your surprise when you did not hire the candidate because he only had one leg and you later learned that you had turned down Terry Fox; or, that you did not hire a candidate because he was in a wheelchair only to learn that you said no to Stephen Hawking, the brightest physicist on Earth!
He asked us to Google search Roger Crawford, a man born with only two fingers on each hand who became a NCAA tennis star.
Myth: disabled employees make customers feel uncomfortable.
Fact: 78% of people say that they are more likely to frequent businesses that employ the disabled.
The Lieutenant Governor asks us to consider taking on a strong and active mentoring role with the disabled.
